Saying and Hearing "No"
Sexual assault is a crime most often committed by someone the victim knows. With teens, the perpetrator is usually an acquaintance, friend or date.

Seventy percent of all rapes and sexual assaults are committed by someone the victim knows.

Sometimes, sexual assault is the result of miscommunication. For example, the guy doesn't pick up on the girl's nonverbal signs or listen to her protests, and the girl isn't assertive enough to tell him what she doesn't want to do.

Discussion Tip:
Talk to your teen about the importance of communicating clearly and assertively expressing her decisions. Likewise, teach your teen to really listen to and respect others' decisions.
