Internet Safety
The Internet brings a world of conveniences - and dangers-into our homes everyday. For parents, new technologies like blogs are oftentimes scary and confusing. But for teens, they're a way of life.
What's a blog? It's a quick and easy way to communicate by posting comments on a web page.
What's MySpace? It's a social-networking web site. Users create personal profiles and blogs.
More than 4 million teens, across the country, keep a blog.
Most teenagers see blogs as harmless fun. In actuality, they are an online predator's dream come true. Teens share their pictures, contact information and personal details with the world.
Discussion Tip:
Don't let your teen's knowledge of Internet technology intimidate you. Establish rules about what is appropriate to post. Encourage your teen to censor visitors to her blog. Explain the danger of meeting online "friends" in person. Consider monitoring the blog yourself; once it's posted on the web, it's public information. |
